Using a 100 Square

Place Value

A practical guide in supporting your child with their understanding of place value. In Year 1, children are taught to work with numbers up to 100.

Finding Missing Numbers

Finding missing numbers is a technique that children find very difficult because of the complexity of the problem. Exposing children to these types of problems early in Year 1 would support them in their deeper understanding of number and the four operations- knowing that addition and subtraction are linked and multiplication and division too.

Word-based Problems

Word-based problems are much trickier for children than the usual calculation. However, teaching children to read their problems out loud and understanding the vocabulary and context of the story is the most important skill to achieve when solving word-based problems.
