Mathematics at Denbigh

The study of mathematics is a much valued component of daily life at Denbigh Primary School. Not only do our pupils follow a bespoke and well organised programme of study; we take great pride in ensuring our staff are trained to deliver this programme successfully. At present, three members of the school staff, including two senior leaders, hold the title of ‘Mathematics Specialist’ (MaST) following the 2-year post graduate qualification.

Early Years - Year 6

At Denbigh Primary School, mathematics is an engaging, creative and highly interconnected discipline where pupils have a wealth of opportunities to enquire and problem solve in a safe environment. Pupils have a love of mathematics through engaging with a rich, broad and balanced curriculum. Our learners are enthusiastic, resilient and cooperative individuals who strive for excellence in mathematics.

At Denbigh Primary School, our Mathematics Mastery curriculum has been developed to ensure every child can achieve excellence in mathematics. Children can experience a sense of awe and wonder as they solve a problem for the first time, discover different solutions and make links between different areas of mathematics. It provides pupils with a deep understanding of the subject through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. This ensures pupils fully understand what they are learning. Our aim is for all children to think mathematically, enabling them to reason, solve problems and assess risk in a range of contexts.

We aspire for every child who leaves this school to become a lifelong learner with a passion and enthusiasm for all STEM subjects.

Continuous Provision in Key Stage One

At Denbigh Primary School, we passionately believe that young children learn best through play and exploration. Wherever possible, we offer children the opportunity to experience real life events that are linked to their learning. Every day, our children get the opportunity to be an artist, writer, mathematician, scientist, designer or storyteller to name but a few! These play-based experiences enable the children to consolidate their skills, knowledge and understanding and enable them to become independent and resilient learners. Throughout the environment, both inside and outside, you will see busy children actively engaged in a wide range of activities that they have chosen to engage in. Continuous provision supports and encourages our children and staff to have a lifelong love of learning.
