This course serves as an introduction to middle school art. In middle school, students learn to understand, apply the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and discuss the expressive properties of artworks. They will apply technical skills effectively to create original two and three dimensional artworks that express a variety of ideas, apply the art-making process to solve problems, and generate design solutions utilizing a variety of media. Students will analyze original artworks, produce, and develop a portfolio.
This ensemble is designed for FIRST YEAR BAND STUDENTS and is the beginning performing group at the middle school level. The goal of this class is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills on their instrument to perform both independently and in groups. The Beginning Band performs for the community several times a year, and also participates in music festivals and solo/ensemble contests at the director’s discretion.
Musicianship is developed through study of proper vocal technique, appropriate musical literature and sight-singing and music reading skills. Periods of music history and the music of many cultures are explored. Unison and some limited two- and three-part choral literature are prepared and performed publicly. Note: Out of school rehearsals and performances are required.
This dance course introduces students to rules, procedures, etiquette and vocabulary required for safe and effective participation in dance. The course provides a sequential introduction to dance techniques such as warm up, cool down, conditioning, stretching, and injury prevention. Students are introduced to a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, tap, jazz, and world dance. Students conduct creative movement studies using Language of Dance and choreographic elements such as relationships, levels, speed, direction, and pathways in individual, partner and group activities. Note: Out of school rehearsals and performances are required.
This course serves as an introduction to Theatre Arts. In middle school, students begin moving from creative drama to more formal theatre. While, the emphasis in Middle School Theatre 1 remains on creative drama,the curriculum and instruction focuses students on building skills toward interpretation and performance. As they advance, students gain a deeper understanding of theatrical elements, principles, and conventions. Young actors begin to dramatize more complex characters. Building on elementary school creative drama, students continue to build improvisation skills in unscripted theatre work.
Teen Leadership and Tech Apps are both semester long courses, so students will take one class in the Fall and the other class in the Spring. For example, if a student takes Tech Apps in the Fall, they will take Teen Leadership in the Spring and vice-versa.
This course will allow students the opportunity to develop leadership, personal, and business skills, a healthy self-concept, healthy relationships, and skills in public speaking and communication. They will also develop an understanding of personal responsibility, emotional intelligence and the skills it measures (self-awareness, self-control, self-motivation, and social skills), personal image, the effects of peer pressure, and the need for vision in goal setting (personally and professionally).
If you are curious how robots work and would like to make the world a better place with computers, this is the class for you! You'll learn computer languages, how to control robots, and will work on fun projects to help people and your community!
Please note that students with special circumstances/class requirements may not be able to choose an elective class for their 6th grade year. Your Elementary School Counselor will communicate with you if this is the case.
