"Sakura, Sakura" is a folk song. It was played in the Edo Period of Japanese history. This is from 1600 to 1850. Then in 1904 it was heard internationally. Giocomo Puccini put this song into his opera called, "Madama Butterfly". The opera ranks in the top 10 of Italian operas.
Traditional instruments like the Koto, a Japanese stringed musical instrument, are now played in modern music. The Koto is the national instrument of Japan and started to appear in the Japanese royal court in the 8th century or the years 701 to 800. The Koto derives from the Chinese zheng, and is similar to the the Korean gayageum, the Vietnamese đàn tranh, and the Sundanese kacapi.
While there are plenty of examples around us of traditional instruments in today's music, check out the band called Wagakki, pictured above. Just one Japanese rock band using many Japanese traditional instruments. You can hear but not always see the Koto, played by Ibukuro Kiyoshi, in their song "Akatsukino Ito". I believe he's the second musician in the photo. Also check-out Luna Lee playing the Korean gayageum, the derivation of the Koto in the videos below. She also explains her journey to becoming an online musician sensation in the 3rd video.
