TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
District Awards
Non-academic achievements are also recognized by the Ministry of Education. These awards do require an application, which becomes available in April (Grade 12's will be informed). Students can fill out an application if they have outstanding achievements in Fine Arts, Applied Art / Design Skills, Physical Activity, Second Languages, Indigenous Culture, Community Service or Trades & Technical Skills. The awards are all valued at $1250 voucher to be redeemed at any post-secondary institution in Canada or abroad and can be held for up to 5 years. Each high school in the province gets an certain number of these awards to give based on size of graduating class. SDSS typically gets between 20 - 25 district awards.
Some scholarships and bursaries are available specifically to South Delta Secondary students through the generosity of donor organizations:
Community Scholarships
These are available in the spring (at the same time as the District Awards) and one application allows students to apply to any number of available scholarships or bursaries on the list supplied. Students must review the list for the individual criteria; there tends to be a focus more on community involvement than on high academic achievement although there are wide variety of criteria for these awards. Many of these awards can be held for up to 2 years.
Entrance Scholarships
Each post-secondary institution offers entrance scholarship opportunities. These are funds to attract students to a particular college or university. Sometimes these scholarships are offered automatically based on high school grades and sometimes additional application forms, resumes and reference letters are required. Any scholarship offer is contingent on accepting the offer of admission for that institution. Click on the school below to be taken to the financial aid website
