Finding Your Inquiry Question
RESEARCH QUESTION:
You will need to have a narrow, focused topic.
If your topic is too broad it will be difficult to cope with the large amount of information or the length constraints of the assignment.
If the topic is too narrow you will have difficulty locating enough information to fulfill the assignment criteria.
EXAMPLES:
Pierre Elliot Trudeau – TOO BROAD (what about him?)
Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s legacy and Canada ’s foreign policy – TOO BROAD (all of Canada's foreign policy, for all time?)
How did Trudeau shape Canada’s foreign policy in the 1970’s? – SOLID QUESTION (who, what, and when are covered)
Trudeau’s influence on Vancouver city government? – TOO NARROW (as Trudeau was a federal government official - Prime Minister of Canada (1968–79; 1980–84). - why would we focus research on only one city?)
