Educational Philosophy & What to Expect in Fifth Grade

Educational Philosophy

I love my job. I. LOVE. IT. Really. I consider myself so incredibly lucky to come to work every day and have parents entrust me with the one thing they value most in this world, their children. I take this job very seriously and aim daily to make the most out of every moment. The aspect of teaching that I am most passionate about is creating personal connections with every one of my students. People in general perform better when they trust, are engaged, motivated, and inspired. I aim to make sure students feel safe, understood, and like they matter.

Through these strong connections, I am better able to understand the learners in my classroom and thus, meet their individual needs. My role as a teacher is to help inspire students to be lifelong learners that embrace new ideas and ways of thinking. I encourage students to ask questions and to play an active role in finding the answers to those questions.

What to Expect in 5th Grade

Fifth grade is an exciting year where students learn to become independent and take responsibility for their own educational journey!  We will begin to prepare students for the rigorous expectations that will be required in middle school and beyond.  There are so many things to learn, including fractional understanding and operations in math, citing evidence to support response to literature and nonfiction, multi-paragraph writing in all 3 genres, US History, and Science!

Life Outside of the Coyote Den

Mrs. Turnbull, 5th Grade

I came to San Diego from Sacramento in 1996 to attend San Diego State University. Once I saw the beauty of San Diego, I knew that I had found my new home and have lived here ever since. My husband and I love raising our kids in the California sunshine! We live close to the beach and take every opportunity to splash in the waves. We also love to camp and never shy away from a road trip (no matter how long!). In summers past, we have spent 3+ weeks camping in Mexico and loved every minute, even though we didn't have running water or electricity!
