In sixth grade, students learn key concepts along the progression toward middle school algebra. Ratios and proportions emerges as a new domain of study, where students explore and reason with ratios and rates in order to solve problems. Sixth graders will also investigate negative numbers for the first time and round out their study of the rational number system before operating with all rational numbers in seventh grade. Work with numerical expressions extends to algebraic expressions, which sets students up to solve one-step equations and inequalities. Students will also continue their study of area and volume of geometric shapes, and will learn how statistics can be used to better understand data about our world.

6th Grade Math requires the use of all the math learned in previous grades. 6th grade math falls into FIVE categories.

Number Sense

The most fundamental branch of math is having a clear idea on number sense, number properties and numeration. It consists of understanding properties of numbers, place values, all operations with decimals and fractions, and comparing and ordering positive and negative numbers.

2. Ratio and Proportional Reasoning

Ratios are a new concept to 6th graders. In mathematics, we use ratios to make comparisons of two or more numbers that indicates their sizes in relation to each other. A ratio compares quantities by division. Ratios allow us to measure and express quantities by making them easier to understand.

3. Expressions and Equations

As students learn about expressions and equations they use variables to represent unknowns, generalize patterns and articulate relationships through related numerical values represent on coordinate graphs.

4. Geometry

Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. In 6th grade, students will learn how to find the area, volume, and surface area of all sorts of geometric shapes and work with shapes on the coordinate plane.

5. Statistics and Probability

In statistics, students will try to make sense of the world by collecting, organizing, analyzing, and presenting large amounts of data. Students will investigate two key concepts, measures of center and measures of variability. Measures of center allow them to investigate what a “typical” or average response to a question might be. Measures of variation allow them to understand how similar or different the data in the set may be or how reliable a measure of center might be. Students investigate all of this within context in order to better understand how statistics can be used to investigate questions and understand more about our world.
