Wine tasting in Spain is unlike any other country that I have visited. Since I have sat for my WSET exam (an international wine exam) it has changed my life in the way that I travel. Travelling now, has become even more of a passion, due to my dedication and love of wine. Enjoying wine not only signifies, the precious liquid being poured, but also the story that goes with it. I am spending four glorious weeks travelling to the various Spanish wine regions and immersing myself in the culture that goes back, in some wineries, almost 400 years.
My first tasting was at the Marquis de Riscal. Located in the medieval town of Elciego, the vineyard, dates back to 1858, making Marqués de Riscal the oldest winery in the region. It was quite an experience actually being there. Generations of wine making, given a modern twist, with the incredible architecture, created by Frank Gehry. I find his style incredible, some might have a total dislike towards it, like wine, it is subjective. I personally recommended a visit which has to be pre booked. The actual tasting was entry level wines, well made but nothing to wow you. If your taste buds are more developed, you can buy a variety of higher end wines, by the glass, after the wine tasting.
