TMS Community Engagement
Community and Engagement in the MYP
Community engagement is a form of learning in which students engage respectfully and equitably with their communities, utilizing knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. It provides opportunities for learners to engage responsively to opportunities and challenges in and with their communities, and to contribute positively through principled action.
01 Explore and prepare
Students can research a community opportunity or challenge which interests them or which relates to the chosen global context of the unit of inquiry. They might ask what actions have been taken or are being taken by others to address their chosen opportunity or challenge.
Students collaborate and plan with community members to address their chosen opportunity or challenge. They engage in dialogue with community members.
02 Relate and act
Students develop a response to their chosen opportunity or challenge and implement this action in collaboration with their community partners.
03 Evaluate and share
Students create a dedicated moment to evaluate their experiences and to self-assess using the learning objectives.
Students reflect on their personal growth throughout the process.
Students share or exhibit their engagement. This could take the form of students sharing with the teacher and does not necessarily require a school-wide event. Schools are encouraged to consider organizing exhibitions or local Festival of Hope events, where appropriate. Schools should carefully consider what is appropriate for their context, students and communities, and that they need to create safe spaces for any kind of sharing.
