KMS Lego Robotics

The LEGO Robotics Application

KMS LEGO Robotics is a 3-part experience where students learn foremost to develop STEM skills in scientific research, which are then applied toward their project presentations, robot building, and program coding. 

First, students work as a team to complete an Innovation Project (a science and engineering project), in which they research a real-world problem in this season's topic, develop an innovative solution, and present their work in under 5 minutes. 

Second, students work as a team to complete the building of a robot, in which they critically think and learn about creating mechanical movements and actions using LEGO motors and parts. 

Third, students work as a team to complete the coding of a program, in which their program moves the robot autonomously to earn as many mission points on this season's field in under 2.5 minutes. 

All three of these parts must be completed by all students in a team (while demonstrating the Core Values of teamwork, inclusion, discovery, innovation, impact, and fun) in order to qualify that team to participate in the First Lego League (FLL) events.

Please note that KMS LEGO Robotics is a significant and sustained weekly commitment for students, and their parents, from September 2026 to December 2026.

To get the most out of KMS LEGO Robotics, students who are offered a spot on the team are expected to put in around four (4) hours of focused time per week practicing and working as a team in-person at Kittredge and online at home.

Parents are expected to support the students' ability to participate fully and respectfully. KMS LEGO Robotics is not a casual (drop in/drop out) club --  it is a serious (and seriously fun!) team collaboration that should be prioritized, or the student risks losing their spot on the team.

If selected as part of the KMS team:

1. Meet for in-person practice once a week on Mondays from 2:40 PM - 4:40 PM and online at home with weekly tasks

• As we get closer to the competition day, teams will meet twice a week in-person. The second meeting can be online, or the time/location can work for the team. 

2. Conduct will meet KMS ROA+R Standards

3. Do not miss more than 4 practices. Missing more than 4 practices will disrupt progress for the student and the team and decrease the overall chance of team success.

Part 2: Teacher Recommendation 

Part 3: Tryout (select 1 of 2 tryout dates - Monday, August 31 or Tuesday, September 1)

• The tryout will include

  1. Interpret a provided code (10 minutes - individual)

  2. Build a LEGO attachment to accomplish a provided mission (15 minutes - partner)

  3. Mock presentation on a provided topic (20 minutes - group)

During the BIOGLOW℠  challenge season, FIRST® LEGO® League teams will experience the vibrancy of the world's ecosystems through two program editions: Founders Edition and Future Edition.
