Dear Families of Upcoming 5th Graders,

To prepare for a strong start to 5th grade, all students will complete a summer reading assignment. The attached packet includes the book list and the activity page students will turn in during the first week of school.

What students need to do this summer:

1. Choose ONE book from the list of six titles (see attached).

2. Read the book over the summer.

3. Complete the attached Book Activity Page.

4. Bring the completed activity to school during the first week of 5th grade.

About the book list:

The six titles were selected from the Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl 2025–2026 list for grades 4–5. The list includes graphic novels, fantasy, mystery, and humor to give students a range of choices:

• The AI Incident by J.E. Thomas

• Botticelli’s Apprentice by Ursula Murray Husted

• Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell

• J vs. K by Jerry Craft & Kwame Alexander

• Monster Locker by Jorge Aguirre & Andrés Vera Martínez

• Teddy vs. The Fuzzy Doom by Braden Hallett

The Book Activity Page will be used for an activity during our first week of ELA. Coming in with the work completed sets students up for a strong start.
