HMS STEM

Our History

Henderson Middle School began a journey towards STEM certification a few years ago. The long and dedicated effort of our faculty & staff culminated in Cognia certification in the spring of 2018. The acronym of STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and involves more than just doing hands-on activities. It is a concept of engaging students in real-world problem solving and project based learning. It requires teachers who are willing to give students the freedom to explore, investigate, collaborate, design, test and redesign their own solutions to STEM challenges faced by our society.

Our Mission

Our mission is to ensure that our scholars are well-equipped with the 21st-century skills and core values needed to meet the global challenges of today's society. Our students are met with rigorous and relevant interdisciplinary content in a learning environment that promotes science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and careers while fostering the joy of inquiry and discovery and promoting a collaborative culture of innovative problem-solving.

What is a STEM team?

In an effort to provide rigorous STEM instruction, Henderson Middle School currently has in place an accelerated math curriculum that enables students to take High School Coordinate Algebra in their last year of middle school. HMS is currently certified under the academy model which allows for identified STEM teams to place an emphasis on STEM and STEM careers while also going through state standards in each subject.
