“Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames… Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice.” (Diary, 1226)
“Most Merciful Jesus… May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of the purifying fire… From the terrible heat of the cleansing fire rises a plaint to Your mercy.” (Diary, 1227)
In these entries, Jesus prompts Faustina to draw indulgences and offer them powerfully on behalf of the suffering—showing that we have real spiritual leverage to aid the poor souls.
“From early morning on the following day, I offered everything for her intention. During Holy Mass, I had a brief experience of her torment… I understood what the longing of the souls in Purgatory was like.”
Here Faustina personally unites her Mass offering with the suffering of a departed soul, directly feeling their intense longing for God.
“Sometimes I talk too much… But Jesus wants me to use that time for little indulgenced prayers for the souls in Purgatory. And the Lord says that every word will be weighed on the day of judgment.”
A vivid reminder that even brief prayers carry weight and count as spiritual almsgiving for the holy souls.
“I saw my Guardian Angel… in a misty place full of fire… a great crowd of suffering souls. They were praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid… I saw Our Lady visiting the souls… the souls call her ‘The Star of the Sea.’ She brings them refreshment… ‘My mercy does not want this, but justice demands it.’”
This vision powerfully underscores our responsibility: the souls can’t save themselves—they rely on our prayers and spiritual works.
“One time a sister who had died… came to me… in flames… I redoubled my prayers for her. After some time she came back… no longer in flames, radiant and joyful… she said many souls had profited from my prayers… she herself would not remain there much longer.”
A testimony: prayer and Mass offering truly ease souls’ purification and hasten their entrance into heaven.
“I saw my Guardian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. In a moment I was in a misty place full of fire in which there was a great crowd of suffering souls. They were praying fervently, but to no avail for themselves; only we can come to their aid. The flames which were burning them did not touch me at all. My Guardian Angel did not leave me for a single moment. And I asked these souls what their greatest torment was. They answered me in one voice that their greatest torment was longing for God.”
“I saw Our Lady visiting the souls in Purgatory. The souls call her ‘The Star of the Sea.’ She brings them refreshment. I wanted to talk with them some more, but my Guardian Angel beckoned me to leave. We went out of that prison of suffering. I heard an interior voice, which said, ‘My mercy does not want this, but justice demands it. Since that time I am in closer communion with the suffering souls.’”
