The tradition of lighting the roadway to commemorate Christ's birth goes back to the 16th Century. While we no longer build bonfires of crisscrossed pinõn branches along the road, Troop 513 and Pack 512 have been helping neighborhoods in and around the Deer Valley area continue this tradition for many years in the Southwestern style of placing a candle in a paper bag and lighting it on Christmas Eve.
This festive project funds a great deal of our scouting activities throughout the year. Each kit contains material to assemble one dozen (12) luminarias, including 12 long burning votive candles in holder, 12 white paper bags, plus sand to hold down the bag. Each luminaria kit is hand prepared by a Scout!

Luminarias are usually set out on the night of December 24th. To setup luminarias for display:
Pour the sand evenly into the 12 white bags (approximately 1 cup per bag)
Place 1 cup holder in each bag and 1 candle in the cup holder
Place the luminarias outside as desired. The typical spacing is about 3-4 feet
Be sure that the bags are fully open so when the candles are lit, the flame doesn't contact the paper
Thank you for supporting Deer Valley Scouts and participating in our annual holiday luminaria project. Happy Holidays!
