The mission of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department is to empower students with essential life and career skills through immersive, lab-based experiences. In our Culinary Arts and Child Development programs, students apply critical thinking and creativity to real-world projects. We prepare students to make informed decisions for personal wellness, cultivate strong family and community bonds, and build a foundation for future career paths.
Family and Consumer Science Department – Culinary Arts Program Goals
Develop Professional Lab Competence: Equip students with foundational and advanced technical skills, prioritizing safety, sanitation, and resource management in both our commercial kitchen and early childhood development labs.
Enhance College and Career Pathways: Prepare students for high-demand fields in hospitality, education, food service, and human services through immersive, hands-on learning and real-world career exploration.
Foster Life Literacy and Wellness: Educate students on nutrition, informed consumer food choices, and healthy human development milestones to support lifelong physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Integrate Academic and Technical Skills: Connect practical lab experiences with core academic concepts in math, science, literacy, and technology to strengthen comprehensive real-world problem solving.
Build 21st-Century Workplace Skills: Cultivate essential soft skills—including effective communication, teamwork, time management, leadership, and entrepreneurship—through collaborative, project-based lab challenges.
