Graysen has been working on drawing a scaled up version of Spider-man, and he recently finished it. Excellent work-and he is only in 5th grade!
5th Grade had an assignment to create animals in sweaters, how fun are these?!
6th Grade learned how to make Translation Tessellations. Here are a few stellar examples!
1st Grade made surprise cards that open into something you might not expect.
8th Grade finished their Puppet Unit. They each designed and created their own fabric puppets using a combination of hand and machine stitching. Then they wrote scripts and made props and scenery to film their own puppet shows. Well done Grade 8!

*** Important Update!
Callie has been working hard this year to submit her artwork in a Scholastic art competition. It has 3 tiers and is for students in grades 7-12. The results of the first tier, the Maine Region Scholastic Art Awards were released on Friday.
There were over 1100 artworks submitted from Maine students in eighteen creative categories. Only ⅓ can receive awards based on originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice. Awards are given at 3 levels, Honorable Mention, Silver Key and Gold Key. Callie submitted 3 artworks and won a silver key and 2 gold keys. Gold and Silver Key awardees will be invited to exhibit their works at the Maine College of Art & Design in Portland. All Honorable Mention, Silver Key and Gold Key Awardees will be invited to the Awards Ceremony at Portland Stage. Callie’s two gold key artworks will move on to the national level! Let’s wish her the best on this wonderful endeavor.
6th Grade learned to render realistic animal eyes using oil pastels.
Kindergarten painted with cotton swabs and then made various polar bear faces focusing on expression; some happy and smiling, and some with angry eyebrows!
Our 4th Grade class has a homeroom teacher that LOVES Minions. This was a fitting lesson for them: Minion Self Portraits! They imagined themselves as Minions, and included favorite colors and hobbies, as well as their hair color and eye color. Some channeled their inner selves a bit, which made this so fun! After these are displayed in the hallway their homeroom teacher will lovingly display them in her classroom.
I missed a day due to a training, and this crinkle hair art was a great assignment for a substitute to do with my 1st and 2nd grade students.
7th Grade made these 2 Point Perspective Castles. As this was their first introduction to 2 Point Perspective this was intense. I think in the future I will make this an 8th grade assignment, and have 7th grade make 2 Point Perspective Robots to help ease them into this concept. It took several class periods, but they got it!
Grade 8 went to the Colby Museum of Art for the day! We had a fabulous tour connecting the environment and how artists interact with it. Students had lunch in the dining hall, followed by a workshop creating their own pin art sculpture.
2nd Grade created beautiful frogs using oil pastels. They were so proud if their hard work and I was too!
1st Grade made snowmen viewed from above.
5th Grade learned about Foreshortening and made portraits with a character falling away from the viewer.
Pre-K is currently working on making Shape Birds. We need another class to finish them, but these two students have already finished.
Two eighth grade students receive additional art time with me once a week. They wanted the challenge of drawing the ocean using chalk pastels. They referred to the same image but made two pieces of art with their own unique styles.
1st Grade made fish collages!
6th Grade Animals using Oil Pastels
Exciting news! Eighth Grade student Callie Hanscom has been selected as a recipient of a Maine Excellence in Arts Education award! The jury is made up of professional artists and winning work will be displayed at the Capitol Complex in the Cross Office building, next to the Maine State House! You can view her work Monday-Friday from 9:00-5:00 between March 20th and May 30th. This is a very prestigious award that is typically bestowed on high school students. I can't wait to see her receive her award this weekend in Portland. Below is a photo of her work.
