The City of Memphis
As the article from the World History Encyclopedia, by Joshua J. Mark, said in 2016, Memphis was one of the most ancient and significant cities in ancient Egypt; it is located on the Giza plateau at the entrance to the Nile River Valley. Memphis was formerly the capital of ancient Egypt and a major religious cult center.
The 3rd-century BCE historian Manetho claims that the first king of Egypt, Menes, built the city after the unification of Egypt. During the unification, Memphis was known as Hiku-Ptah, which means Mansion of the Soul of Ptah. Ptah was the protector of the area around the city of Memphis. He became the patron deity of the city after it was built in his honor.
