Bem Vindo!
We’re thrilled to be heading back to Lisbon, this time for Lisbon Design Week!
We’ve found that these types of city-wide design events are an ideal opportunity to meet with independent producers, the creative teams behind major brands, and a wide range of design professionals. Plus, you get to see the city, and have access to studios and interiors that might not otherwise be accessible. Add to that the special events, workshops, and other events that are part of the programming...it’s intimate and engaging in the way a trade show never is!
Please note: This itinerary is subject to change, due to availability of private tour access, possible new options, and other considerations beyond the control of Decor Tours.
Wednesday, May 28
We’ll visit a design studio near our hotel to see new introductions from some of their preferred partners, including Sugo Rugs.
After a lunch a Locke, our host hotel and a major Lisbon Design Week hub, we’ll head out to one of our favorite Lisbon destinations, the fascinating cabinet of wonders of Oficina Marques, where we’ll get a behind the scenes at their latest collaboration with famed tile producer Viuva Lamego.
Next is a private guided tour of the recently re-opened MUDE, the museum of fashion and design, featuring a selection of young design talents.
This ends the afternoon down near the pedestrian mall of R. Augusta and the famous Praça do Comércio, with its colorful colonnaded buildings, impressive arch, and prospect over the Tagus river.
Thursday, May 29
A full day of studio visits and special installations with appointments to meet some of Portugal’s leading creative talents and design professionals, plus explore more of Lisbon's neighborhoods.
Ave Infante Santo is known for its contemporary tile murals and is also home a thriving design community. We’ll make stops to meet with textile artist Mariana Rola Pereira, as well as the design studios Santo Infante and Studio Khola.
Then we’ll head to the Principe Real neighborhood for two unique installations. The architect/interior design team of Margarida and Pedro Moura Simão take over the Galeria Tapeçarias de Portalegre and transform it into a collector’s home; while Studio Gameiro presents Sinestesia, featuring unexpected convergences between design and the senses.
There are more LDW installations in this area, as well as plenty of shopping opportunties!
Lunch included.
Friday, May 30
We have a behind-the-scenes private tour of the only tile (and other ceramic products) factory operating in Lisbon.
Afterwards, there are plenty of choices—head to Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, or the early Renaissance Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. There are also several open studios in the area, including textile artist Maria Pratas, glass designer Martinho Pita, and more than a few ceramicists.
We’ve booked a river cruise for the early evening, and we encourage you to make a dinner reservation for after, on the waterfront or in one of Lisbon's many rooftop restaurants to get a great sunset (8:30 pm or so!) view.
Lunch included.
Saturday, May 31
A wonderful morning visit to the
Palácio Fronteira, the Mascarenhas’ family seat, and the primary home of Marquis & Marchioness of Fronteira. This lovely 17th c. estate contains the largest collection of seventeenth-century “azulejos” (Portuguese tiles) preserved in their original installations.
Lunch will be a choose-your-own-option at the Mercado de Campo de Ourique, a market/food hall with dozens of choices. After lunch, we have an artist workshop and visits to several LDW special installations, including one on how AI can co-exist with artisanal practices.
Sunday, June 1
A day to explore Lisbon based on your own agenda—let us know what you might be interested in and we’re happy to help!
For example:
• Avenida da Liberdade is often compared to the Champs-Élysées in Paris it has all the luxury brands you’d expect to find. But you can also discover regional brands that never make it to the States…and many summer weekends also feature the Feira da Avenida, a curated street market of antiques, artisans, and food offerings.
• Lisbon has many shops that are part of the Lojas com História (Shops with History) association—books, candles, gloves, wine, shoes, etc. Even if you’re not shopping for a specific product, the shops interiors are usually worth it!
• EmbaiXada is a mini-galleria of independent shops and dining options housed in a 1870s palace. It could be the start of a great shopping day, with another galleria, Nº50, just across the way and dozens of boutiques, both new and historic, lining the street.
• If you’re looking for antiques, check out Rua de São Bento, especially street numbers 200 through around 450.
• Maybe you’d like to spend more time outside and get your steps in? What about heading up the 11th c. Castelo de São Jorge, followed by visiting some of the nearby miradouros (lookouts) Lisbon is known for.
• Are you a fan of unique museums? Lisbon has several—a water museum, a tile museum, a coach museum, the immersive Quake experience and museum, a national treasures museum, a fado museum, and the related Ah, Amália, immersive experience on the story of one of Portugal’s greatest fado artists. Or perhaps you’re a fan of the famous nature-inspired ceramics Portugal is known for, if so, there’s a museum for its creator Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. And there many more!
Monday, June 2
A road trip to Sintra, the historic summer destination of Portuguese royalty and rich & famous of the time.
We’ll visit two exceptional examples of Romantacism, both packed with amazing details inside and out. And both with wonderful grounds that also prime examples of the Romantic period.
Lunch included and perhaps another stop en route, but you’ll be back in Lisbon for your packing and a final group dinner at our hotel.
