Many students who have experienced cyberbullying or bullying are more prone to suicidal thoughts. But, when students spend a lot of time on social media, there is also the risk of being troubled with bullying that creates a negative impact on the bully’s target. Many parents have no idea that bullying is occurring, but with screenings that primary care providers can do, they can find if there is a risk of suicide or other mental health issues. A survey was taken from kids that were bullied or were bullied. Results came back and 7.6% experienced suicidal thoughts, 0.9% bullied others, and 8.9% were the targets. Those results make suicide the second leading cause of death among those aged 10 to 24 (Murez).
Many people believe that their source of feeling good about themselves is food, but it's causing mental health in students to worsen. Depression in heavier-set people is more common in women than men, but at a greater chance of having symptoms of depression. A study completed by the Seoul National University of Medicine found that depressed people are more likely to lose weight, but trying to achieve that goal is letting them feel insecure about themselves. Men have a smaller chance of feeling obese than women because of the pressure that women have to be skinny. Many think that there is only anxiety if you are obese, but the study that Dr. Agnes Ayton did with the Seoul National University of Medicine found that having good nutrition is very beneficial to mental and physical health. But no matter if you are overweight or have a good body shape, you still are at risk of anxiety and depression (Hosie).
Chronic anxiety can interfere with how you live your life, but having a little anxiety is normal for your body. From the brain, several effects have an impact on your brain. Panic attacks that are caused by anxiety can lead to heart palpitations, chest pain, warmer body temps, and lightheadedness. Headaches are most frequent with constant worry and stress. Having a sense of doom can lead to frequent feelings of something bad that is going to happen. Depression symptoms consist of social removal, loss of interest in multiple things, and feelings of guilt. When you have high anxiety, your lungs go from a normal pace to a rapid pace, more intense, and could lead to a panic attack. Pounding hearts occur when you have panic attacks and can also lead to faster breathing. Some have an upset stomach or fatigue in their body throughout the day. General anxiety disorder is when you worry about many things for longer than six months, affecting your daily life. But, social anxiety disorder is when you fear what's going on in the social aspect of life. Post-traumatic stress disorder is when you have seen or gone through something that has scared you emotionally. But most of the effects of these have been headaches, muscles tensing up, and depression (Cherney).
