The financial challenges brought about, in part, by the lingering impact of COVID-19, necessitates a re-examination of The UWI Global Campus’ (UWIGC) approach to online teaching and learning and its use of human resources and pedagogical practices in the delivery of online instruction. A review of our present, resource-intensive instructional model, reveals one that is financially unsustainable, with more than a thousand course facilitators (i.e. Course Coordinators, Instructors, e-tutors, Group Facilitators, Practicum Supervisors and Second Examiners) being contracted each semester. An examination of the research literature as well as the global higher education online learning landscape reveals that there are more sustainable, cost effective models that can be employed, without sacrificing a quality learner experience. The purpose of this paper is to propose such a model; one that is suited to our unique context and which seeks to focus not only on reducing cost, but also on improving teaching and learning through enhanced student engagement and interaction whilst taking full advantage of the affordances of new and emerging technologies.
The proposed revised teaching model is focused on making better use of human resources, given the current financial climate while still maintaining teaching and learning quality.
