Enrichment
Extracurriculars are open to any student who desires to participate and meets the basic criteria (such as grade level, etc.) Programs offered include:
Southern Lakes Anthology (grades 3-8): Students submit a piece of art, prose, poetry, cartoon, or illustrated writing to be judged at the school district level. The top 24 pieces advance to the regional level, and some may be published in the yearly Southern Lakes Anthology book.
Middle School Leadership: 7th and 8th graders are recommended by classroom teachers to attend a leadership conference at UW-Whitewater held in October. This conference provides activities to develop leadership talents and strengths for middle school students. Ardan James combines magic-type illusion with mime movement and uses contemporary music, ventriloquism, and audience participation to thoroughly entertain the children while they learn. The afternoon is spent in small groups doing hands-on activities. (Limited to four students.)
Science Immersion: 5th or 6th graders are invited to apply for a day to learn about science at a nearby university. This event is designed for high ability 5th and 6th grade students who love science and who have rarely, if ever, been on college campuses. By exposing them to college opportunities, science labs and chances to talk with professors and students, these students will have a better understanding of the courses they should take in middle school and high school to set themselves up for college STEM majors. (Limited to four students.)
Arts Immersion: 7th and 8th graders are invited to apply for the regional Arts Immersion Conference. (Limited to four students.)
Math 24 - A multi-district tournament using the card game Math 24. Students in 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade compete to earn cards of varying points, based on their level of difficulty. Levels of competition include single digits, double digits, integers and exponents, and fractions and decimals.
Math Meet - A math competition consisting of problems from a variety of topics, including general problem solving, geometry, consumer math, mental math, and algebra. Students compete individually and as a team throughout the event. All scores are combined to make up the team’s final score. Coordinators are able to choose students in whatever way best fits their district - using our ready-made Math Meet screeners, using MAP or other math data, teacher recommendation, etc. Four regional meets are held based on district enrollment and the highest two teams from each region advance to the Mega Math Meet in Madison each May. The Southern Lakes Advanced Learners Network is planning to hold 2024 meet at UW-Whitewater.
