The following is an excerpt from my poetry, which was published in TDSB's Newcomers Program book We Carry New Lives in the Fall of 2021. The book is a compilation of numerous students' experiences as immigrants in Canada.
Blood Diamonds is a psychological fantasy short story I wrote in April 2025, inspired by recurring dream imagery and analyzed through both Carl Jung's archetypal theory and Freudian psychoanalytic frameworks. The narrative follows a teenage protagonist who discovers supernatural abilities through an ancestral bracelet, exploring themes of cultural identity, belonging, and transformation against the backdrop of an affluent New England coastal community.
The story examines the psychological tension between assimilation and heritage preservation, using supernatural elements as metaphors for the awakening of cultural consciousness. Through Jungian analysis, the protagonist's visions represent the collective unconscious connecting her to ancestral wisdom, while the Freudian interpretation explores the bracelet as a symbol of repressed cultural identity emerging into consciousness during adolescent development.
This piece demonstrates my interest in using speculative fiction to explore contemporary psychological and cultural themes, particularly the complex navigation of identity formation within multicultural contexts.
