Getting a full night (12 hours) of sleep is important to student learning. Children who are well rested have better focus, stamina, and emotional responses during the school day. Establishing a consistent bed time routine at the same time each evening will make sleep time easier.
Eating healthy foods helps children stay engaged and learning at school. The foods they eat should be fuel for their day - such as fruits, vegetables, proteins, and drinking lots of water. Eating a healthy breakfast will help start their day off on the right foot, and providing healthy snacks and lunches keeps them full all day long so they can continue playing and learning. Often times it is difficult to juggle this new schedule of now getting your child off to school on time. At Lakewoods we offer a Breakfast Program operated by school staff and it is free to students. Call the office for details!
Having independent skills helps the transition to Kindergarten. Encourage your child to dress themselves, pack up their back packs, open and close containers, use the washroom and clean up after using activities independently. Encourage your child to self advocate by reminding them to communicate and use their words when they need assistance .
It is important for children to be at school every day to help with their daily routine and being engaged in learning in the classroom. Being on time and at school each day will help them with their transition to Kindergarten.
Engaging in pre-school programs and extra- curricular activities has a positive effect on your child's social development. Learning how to share, take turns, communicate, follow routines, respect personal space and expectations are all apart of the Kindergarten curriculum.
Communication with your child's educators and the school is important. Your child's educator will provide a way to communicate with them through the use of a notebook or folder. Check it daily for any questions or information you may have, as well as any forms from the office. Open communication between home and school makes for a smooth transition for your child.
Learning happens at all hours of the day, from the moment your child wakes up to when they go to sleep. Having conversations, asking questions, reading together, and practising routines and independence are all ways that children can learn and develop at home. This helps with their transition to Kindergarten.
Having consistency and connecting home and school is important for a child's understanding of expectations. The Zones framework provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, manage their sensory needs, and improve their ability to problem solve conflicts. See our zones of regulation page for more information.
Please be sure to let the office know exactly who is approved to pick up your child at the end of the day. If there is a change to your approved pick up list, make sure you notify your child's Educators and the office immediately. We will never dismiss a child who is not on the list. The safety of our students is so important to us. Having a safe dismissal routine ensures all our students get home safely with their families.
