Reflecting, Reframing, and Recreating: A Collaborative Leadership Approach to Neurodiversity Education in the Classroom and Beyond
Fostering an understanding of Neurodiversity and Neurodifferences in the educational (and other) sectors has many well documented benefits, not just for those who are Neurodivergent, but for all Humans. By promoting and continually striving for inclusive, safe spaces for all neurotypes, staff and students feel valued, understood, and able to be their authentic selves. The opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas becomes more accessible and the quality of learning experiences increase for all. There is a direct impact on well-being and feelings of belonging, and more equitable opportunities for success and leadership are created, through creativity and innovation.
In keeping with our Human Rights Policy and Procedures, a Neuroaffirmative approach to education:
Is aligned to anti-oppressive, anti-colonial practice
Provides intentional opportunities to increase trauma-informed practice and inquiry
Intentionally supports capacity of staff and students to embed critically conscious skill building by establishing true co-learning communities related to Neurodiversity
Reinforces a critically reflective and responsive approach to teaching and learning
Fosters authentic community building founded on the principles of equity, social justice and postnormal possibilities
Builds trust, sense of belonging and feeling of safety where students and staff can take risks, build on their collaborative and independent learning skills, and experience authentic success
