The focus of this grade 11 course is to provide students with valuable experiences in outdoor pursuits by developing skills that can be put to use in a lifetime of enjoyment within our outdoor environment. No experience required…but an adventurous attitude is essential!
Units include Mountain Biking, Hiking, Canoe Tripping Theory, Canoe Technique and Rescues, Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing, Rock Climbing and Outdoor Survival.
Note: Supplementary fees for enhanced learning through field experiences may be collected as the course proceeds. Trip fees may total approximately $350.

This course investigates interactions between natural and human systems, with a particular emphasis on the impacts of human activity on ecosystems and natural processes. Students will assess resource management and sustainability practices, as well as related government policies and international accords. They will also consider questions of individual responsibility and environmental stewardship as they explore ways of developing a more sustainable relationship with the environment.
This course is linked with PAD 301. The topics and concepts of this course will also be taught/ discussed while completing outdoor excursions around Uxbridge and the surrounding area.

The Outdoor Education program at USS has a partnership with Fleming College where students gain a College level credit during the course. A Fleming College instructor will join our class once per week and the course runs in parallel with the two high school credits. Content from this course is focused on the environment and experiential learning.
Because this course is part of the Environment SHSM program, students will gain certifications in Standard First Aid, Bird and Tree Identification, GPS Navigation, WHIMIS, Knots and Paddling Techniques. SHSM requirements will be discussed as part of this course for students who are interested in achieving the Environment SHSM certification.
