Our Queer Studies Course Description is:
This equity and social justice course will develop an understanding of historical and contemporary issues related to equity, diversity, and social justice in a variety of contexts in Canada and globally. Through a Queer lens, students will explore the nature of diversity and power relations in Canada and how social norms have shaped Queer identities. Through an intersectional lens, students will develop an understanding of the complexity of Queer identities. Through an ally capacity lens, students will learn about social activism and how to address situations that involve discrimination, harassment, and the denial of rights. Further, students will be provided an opportunity to explore avenues of social justice through inquiry and research to design an initiative supporting the Queer community. This course has been designed for all students who identify as 2SILGBTQ and their allies to come together in learning and community.
Our Black Studies Course Description is:
This course traces the historical and contemporary contributions of Black Canadians, with a focus on the evolution of our national identity and culture with a specific emphasis on people who represent the Black Diaspora. Through the interdisciplinary domain of Black Studies, this course will develop students critical, analytical, oral and written communication skills through and with respect to the social sciences. Students will discover new understandings and new appreciation of people in the Black Diaspora, especially through the Canadian lens from historical, theoretical, and social perspectives. Students will also examine historical contemporary issues of importance to people of African ancestry by studying and interpreting various texts and resources. Finally, students will be empowered to use their new learning to make a difference in their communities and become agents of change.
