Peer Tutoring is an opportunity to earn a high school credit by working in a grade 9 or 10 classroom where your primary role is to work along side students and help them to succeed.
Peer Tutors are assigned to Grade 9 or 10 open, applied or essential courses, where teachers and students benefit the most from the additional support. Typical subjects that are eligible are grouped into two categories:
Box A: Multi-Level Subjects - English - French - History - Geograph - Math - Science - Civics/Careers
Box B: Open-Level Subjects - Dance, Drama, Music - Family Studies - Info & Comm Tech - Sp Ed - Physical Education - Tech Studies - Visual Arts - Credit Recovery
While you may select any subject, you should have an interest in and an aptitude for the subject you choose. Your application answers will show this and we will check your marks from previous courses that relate. You must have earned at least 70% in your chosen subject so that you are able to confidently assist students in the class.
Be honest when completing your application. Successful peer tutors must be reliable role models who act responsibly, have excellent attendance, a good office record and a willingness to demonstrate effective people skills.
Students in SHSM programs must earn two Cooperative Education Credits
Peer Tutoring will qualify as a Cooperative Education Credit
To earn two credits, Peer Tutoring would need to be earned in two different semesters.
Students may also take two periods of traditional co-op at a community placement in addition to peer tutoring
