This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music. Students will perform and create music as a class with guitars, voices, wind instruments, and computer based programs. Previous experience in music is not required. Students will participate in creative activities that teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use.
This course emphasizes performance of guitar music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including composition, theory, and history. This course is designed for the beginning guitar student who will learn how to tune the guitar, read chord charts and melodic notation, be introduced to folk, rock, pop, blues, jazz and classical styles through performance, listening, music theory and the history of the guitar.

Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures.
