About Classroom Lessons
SGMS Counseling Department delivers 5-6 school-wide lessons each year. We partner with the Social Studies department to use their classroom for these lessons. Below is a list of the lessons that will be provided to all students as Tier 1 support during the 2024-2025 school year. For more information, please feel free to contact the grade-level counselor!
Counselors meet with every student for....one minute. We use this time to get an initial check on how school is going at the start of the year. (August)
Students learn about career clusters and which cluster best matches their interests and strengths. They also choose a career cluster for Career Day in March (September).
Students learn how to assess, manage, and cope with stress in a positive manner (November).
Lessons will range from academic strategies for success, self-reflection, and goal setting, and using those skills to then plan for success in high school and beyond!
In middle school, sixth graders will learn about positive friendships and peer interactions. Seventh graders will learn strategies to advocate for themselves and others, and eighth graders will learn models for conflict resolution.
ICAP is a plan that is individualized and student-driven as well as a requirement for graduation. In middle school, we get a jump start on career exploration and learning Naviance in preparation for full ICAP development in high school.
