Essential Skills Activities

Here are a few ideas that support connections to one another, connections with self, and connections with the community. These activities can be used before or after reading If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall. These are just suggested levels for each activity, please use what you feel works best with the students in your school and adjust content as needed.

  • Make a classroom collage or quilt with a focus on what makes our school community special?

  • Draw or write: What can you do to make the world a better place?

  • Write your own letter to an alien, if you had a visitor from outer space what would you like them to know about your culture and community? Letter writing kit

  • Create a group contract: What is one thing each one of us will do to make the Earth a healthier place to live?


  • Discussion: What are some concepts and characteristics of Earth the author missed?

  • Create a Venn diagram titled "You and Me." Create partners and have them complete the Venn diagram together, finding both unique and similar qualities.

  • Learn how to sign your name and one other person's name in sign language and share it with that person. resource

  • Have students work on accurately identifying their feelings. Share if appropriate. This is an effective way for teachers to build relationships with students. Mood Meter
