Middle and High School Ideas

Outside, Inside's topics & themes have relevance for all ages and in all subjects. Here are just some ideas secondary classes can do to make connections with the book. Please share what teachers are doing in your school!

  • All Schools (with Sources of Strength and/or Enrichment periods)

    • SEL, Mindfulness & Wellness lessons and activities


  • All Subjects:

    • Take a few minutes at the start of each class for an SEL or Community Building activity

    • Have students create a picture book on a topic they are studying to share with Elementary students


  • Art:

    • #OneBookDCSD art projects/contest

    • LeUyen Pham's designated Secondary School visit on November 8th is specifically for our Middle & High School Art classes!


  • Broadcasting/Video Tech:

    • Create #OneBookDCSD commercials or videos to share with their school & sending schools


  • Business

    • Analyze economic impacts of pandemic


  • Community Service groups:

    • LeUyen Pham was inspired to donate proceeds of her book to local food banks during the early days of the pandemic....how does reading Outside, Inside inspire us to do more to help those in our community?

    • Assist with our #OneBookDCSD food drive

    • Local food banks granting community service hours to student volunteers


  • English/Language Arts:

    • Write about quarantine or other aspects of the pandemic (journal entries, poems, letters)

    • Use Outside, Inside as a springboard for discussions about Point of View

    • Research projects/discussion of primary & secondary sources


  • FCS:

    • Consider what elements make a home soothing & safe during a quarantine

    • Foods- Discussion of the limited grocery supply during the early days of the pandemic

    • Sewing/Fashion classes- Collaborate with FCS departments in other schools to create an Outside, Inside quilt


  • Health/PE:

    • Mindful Yoga


  • Math:

    • Analyzing statistics

    • Creating charts & graphs


  • Music:

    • Performing virtually for local assisted living/nursing home residents


  • Science:

    • Research & discuss effects quarantine had on environment

    • Microbiology


  • Social Studies:

    • Research how other countries have been affected by pandemic

    • Compare/contrast COVID-19 pandemic with other pandemics throughout history

    • Economics: Analyze economic impacts of pandemic


  • Technology:

    • Tech projects that align with OBOD or Outside,Inside themes


  • World Language:

    • Translate Outside, Inside into language students are studying

    • Research how people in other countries have been affected by & are dealing with the pandemic
