Helping Our Friends Bloom: New Conflict Strategies!
In our classroom, we will continue to work hard on becoming Positive Problem Solvers! To help our kiddos navigate their big feelings and social hurdles, we are introducing two simple but powerful tools: The Stoplight and A Bug and a Wish.
These strategies give our students a "roadmap" for what to do when they feel frustrated, helping them move from a reactive "ouch" moment to a peaceful "fix-it" moment.
🚦 The Stoplight Strategy
This helps students manage their internal "engine" before they say or do something they might regret.
🔴 Red Light: STOP. Take three deep breaths to cool down your brain.
🟡 Yellow Light: THINK. What is the problem? How do I feel? What is a kind way to solve this?
🟢 Green Light: GO. Use your words to talk to your friend and try out a solution.
🐞 A Bug and a Wish
This is a simple "script" that helps students express their needs without blaming or shouting.
The Bug: "It bugs me when you [action, like taking my pencil]..."
The Wish: "...and I wish you would [request, like ask me first next time]."
How You Can Help at Home
You might hear your kiddo using these phrases at the dinner table or with siblings! If they are feeling frustrated, you can gently ask:
"Do we need to hit the Red Light and take a breath?" or "Can you give your brother/sister a Bug and a Wish?"
By using the same language at home and at school, we’re helping these kind habits stick for life. We can't wait to see our classroom Peace Proponents in action!
