The Week of Aug 17th:
Our second graders have done a wonderful job this week. They have taken several pretests, and Ms. Howell visited our class to teach us how to make an origami cube. Next week students will take iReady tests in both math and reading .
Read on to find out what your second grader did this week:
Math: Students took a math pretest. They also practiced the problem-solving skill of making an organized list. Students persevered through a challenging math sheet called Equato and also played "Which One Doesn't Belong" as a warm-up.
ELA: Students listened to and read our first Junior Great Book story, " The Rich Man and the Shoemaker". They learned the difference between a discussion and an argument and applied that learning during our discussion of the story. Students were also tested for reading fluency and phonics knowledge. Students completed their writing pretests.
Social Studies: We created our class agreements: Choose Kindness, Be Safe, and Take Care of the Classroom (People and Things). Students started earning PRIDE tickets for positive behavior. We finished our Behavior Story packets.
Mental Health: Mrs. Cassie came and taught us a lesson about learning to solve our problems.

The Week of Aug 12th:
We made it through the first few days of 2nd grade! It has been so fun getting to know the students and seeing them in action. Next week, remember that on Friday the late starts begin. Doors will open at 9:10, and school starts at 9:20. I hope to see you next week at the Back-to-School Carnival. It is a great way to see all the great things being offered at NRE and build community.
Read on to find out what your second grader did this week:
Math: Students learned about "Dice Windows", an activity from youcubed, developed by professors at Stanford University. We talked about addition, subtraction, multiplication, patterns, background knowledge, schema, squares, and a whole lot more with this seemingly simple activity, which has a low floor for entering the mathematical concept, but a high ceiling so students can really demonstrate what they know. We also learned about our first problem-solving strategy: using logical reasoning through a Problem Solvers activity.
ELA: Students listened to read-alouds about being yourself, a nervous third grader with a magical cape, and the very beginning of the class read-aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Students did an art project about being an individual, wrote 5 tips on how to have a good school year, and started with the first Depth and Complexity lesson on Big Ideas. The first idea we explored was power and its many forms. Then students explored their own powers.
Social Studies: We have been working on building community in our classroom with Morning Meetings and other getting-to-know-you activities. Next week will develop a class motto and rules along with learning about proper behavior expected of 2nd graders.
Mental Health: We learned a game called "Captain's Coming" and also learned a centering skill called "Butterfly Hug"
Specials: Students had a chance to visit most specials offered. Tech will not start until the week of the 25th
