The Week of September 21st:
We have had another great week in second grade. Students are starting to bond as a class, and it has been amazing to witness. iRead scores were sent home in Thursday Folders and ALPs will be sent electronically on the 30th. Parent-teacher conferences will be held on October 6th and 7th. Sign-ups will be sent in the Pronghorn Press. On Monday September 28th, we will retake our class picture, and students will have a chance to purchase items at the book fair during our library time. The Book Fair will run the entire week. Students are welcome to shop before or after school if they didn't get a chance at our scheduled time.

ELA: Students wrote a formal information paragraph answering the question: After reading 3 Junior Great book stories on the theme of community, how can community members help? This was highly structured and teacher-led. Students also took a quiz on our Junior Great Book story. They also met the characters, Poodle and What? during grammar instruction. Ask you student about what they learned.
Social Studies: We focused on bully prevention lessons from WayFinder this week.
Mental Health: Ms. Cassie came and taught us a lesson on how to identify feelings.

The Week of September 14th:
This week was filled with fun and exciting events. The field trip was a wonderful success, and the students learned so much. Thank you to our wonderful chaperones. The Fun Run prize day was on Friday. Every child got a sweet treat and a chance to play on the inflatables. On Monday, there is no school as it is a teacher workday. I will be at a training on Tuesday, but will be back in the classroom on Wednesday. Look for iReady scores to come home next week, and conferences will be held the week of October 5th.

ELA: Students read, did a vocabulary study, and discussed a Junior Great Book story called " My Great- Grandmother's Gourd". We are focusing on the big ideas of "What makes a good friend?" and "What makes a good community member?" Students began the formal process of writing a piece on a general theme of the three stories we have read so far.
Social Studies: We had a wonderful field trip to the mansion. We also continued on our theme of power and explored invisible and visible power.
Mental Health: This week we learned about feelings and started talking about the power of our words and actions. We are working on our bully proofing lessons as well.

The Week of September 7th:
This week, we had special visitors from the Highlands Ranch Historical Society. They gave a short presentation on the history of Highlands Ranch, and students then had a chance to explore and examine artifacts from the past. Students also took home a booklet of activities and a ruler to keep at home. Next week is our field trip. It is on Tuesday, September 15th. Please make sure your student is dressed for the weather and for walking outside. They will need a lunch from home as well.

ELA: Students read, did a vocabulary study, answered questions, discussed, and took a test on a Junior Great Book story called " Hurricane Flowers". We are focusing on the big ideas of "What makes a good friend?" and "What makes a good community member?" Students finished publishing their Important Books and shared a piece of their book with classmates. It was our first time this year to practice reading something we wrote out loud to our peers. The students were so brave and did wonderfully.
Social Studies: We finished our Colorado Maps and got to visit with some people from the Highlands Ranch Historical Society.

Thank you for all of your support for the Fun Run. It was an amazing success. This week, our math groups started. Math: Students tested on iReady. We will start formal math groups next week. Students also did some review on place value and did an activity on making an organized list to solve a word problem.
ELA: Students tested on iReady. They read a story called As Good as You". We discussed what makes a good friend. Students learned about statements, questions, and putting capitals at the beginning of sentences in grammar. Students also took their first progress monitoring reading check-in.
Social Studies: We started our geography unit. Students learned about oceans, the equator, longitude, and latitude.
Mental Health: Mrs. Cassie came and taught us a lesson on interoception.

The Week of Aug 17th:
Our second graders have done a wonderful job this week. They have taken several pretests, and Ms. Howell visited our class to teach us how to make an origami cube. Next week students will take iReady tests in both math and reading .

Math: Students took a math pretest. They also practiced the problem-solving skill of making an organized list. Students persevered through a challenging math sheet called Equato and also played "Which One Doesn't Belong" as a warm-up.
ELA: Students listened to and read our first Junior Great Book story, " The Rich Man and the Shoemaker". They learned the difference between a discussion and an argument and applied that learning during our discussion of the story. Students were also tested for reading fluency and phonics knowledge. Students completed their writing pretests.
Social Studies: We created our class agreements: Choose Kindness, Be Safe, and Take Care of the Classroom (People and Things). Students started earning PRIDE tickets for positive behavior. We finished our Behavior Story packets.
Mental Health: Mrs. Cassie came and taught us a lesson about learning to solve our problems.

The Week of Aug 12th:
We made it through the first few days of 2nd grade! It has been so fun getting to know the students and seeing them in action. Next week, remember that on Friday the late starts begin. Doors will open at 9:10, and school starts at 9:20. I hope to see you next week at the Back-to-School Carnival. It is a great way to see all the great things being offered at NRE and build community.

Math: Students learned about "Dice Windows", an activity from youcubed, developed by professors at Stanford University. We talked about addition, subtraction, multiplication, patterns, background knowledge, schema, squares, and a whole lot more with this seemingly simple activity, which has a low floor for entering the mathematical concept, but a high ceiling so students can really demonstrate what they know. We also learned about our first problem-solving strategy: using logical reasoning through a Problem Solvers activity.
ELA: Students listened to read-alouds about being yourself, a nervous third grader with a magical cape, and the very beginning of the class read-aloud, The Year of Billy Miller. Students did an art project about being an individual, wrote 5 tips on how to have a good school year, and started with the first Depth and Complexity lesson on Big Ideas. The first idea we explored was power and its many forms. Then students explored their own powers.
Social Studies: We have been working on building community in our classroom with Morning Meetings and other getting-to-know-you activities. Next week will develop a class motto and rules along with learning about proper behavior expected of 2nd graders.
Mental Health: We learned a game called "Captain's Coming" and also learned a centering skill called "Butterfly Hug"
Specials: Students had a chance to visit most specials offered. Tech will not start until the week of the 25th
