As we work to transition students into middle school, make up work when a student is absent must become a priority. Absences can cause students to fall behind and once behind, it can be difficult to catch back up. When a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to talk with me or email me to find out what they need to complete for the absence.
This page also explains the types of homework given for each quarter of the year. The purpose of homework is to reinforce skills we are learning in class, review skills from previous years (particularly in the area of grammar) and practice new skills. It is important that your student completes their homework. While I do not take homework for a grade, at the middle school level, they do! It is important that your student use this year to establish some good study habits and homework routines that can carry over into their middle school years.
You may see a slight uptick in the amount of homework your student has during this quarter. Students will continue to have vocabulary work and reading comprehension or grammar work. In addition, some students may find that they need to work on their writing project at home if they are not able to complete their work in class. I will also begin sending Algebra Readiness packets home to help students prepare for the middle school math placement test in mid-March. I will do my best to make sure that all homework has a due date on the front page to help students (and parents) keep up with due dates.
Vocabulary Work
This quarter, our vocabulary work will focus on using vocabulary in context. Each Friday, students will get a stapled packet that focuses on 10-15 words. The packet is due the following Friday. Students will also take a quiz on Fridays over the words of the week. Almost every quiz question will come directly from the homework, so it is important that students complete the work.
Reading/Grammar Homework
We will continue to have an assignment for reading comprehension or grammar each week. However, during this semester, some of the reading work will be related to our science, social studies, or social emotional learning units. These assignments may be given at any point during the week, but students will always have at least 2 nights to complete the work.
Math Homework
Students will begin to get more math homework as we prepare for the math placement test. This test will be given in mid to late March and is one important piece in the body of evidence for middle school math placement. Additionally, your student may have math homework if they were unable to finish their independent practice assignment during math class on any given day. Independent practice work is due the following day.
Each student will have two weekly homework assignments during the second quarter of the year. One assignment will be related to Greek and Latin Root/Stems for vocabulary development. The other will be ELA related and will alternate between grammar practice and reading comprehension.
Vocabulary Homework
Each week, the students will focus on 2-4 new Latin and Greek roots/stems. They will have 4-6 short google form assignments to complete. Most of these assignments take between 5 and10 minutes to complete. The vocabulary assignments will be posted in Google Classroom on Monday mornings and are due on Friday mornings. Students will take a vocabulary assessment based on the words of the week each Friday. Students will receive one completion grade for the weekly homework, as well as a grade for their vocabulary quiz.
Grammar/ Reading Comprehension Homework
The grammar or reading comprehension homework will be a photocopied assignment. It will be sent home in your student's weekly folder on Fridays. It is due the following Friday. This assignment will be graded for mastery of content. Reading passages may be related to the topics we are studying in science or social studies, or may be focused on specific reading skills such as nonfiction text structures.
Math Homework
Math homework will continue to be assigned as needed, on an individual basis. Students who are unable to finish their independent work during their math block may need to finish this work as homework. If you feel that your student needs additional practice on particular skills, please let me know. Students are always welcome to take their math workbooks home for review or extra practice. It is rare that we complete every practice problem for a given lesson, so students often have additional problems they can practice as needed.
