Birthday Policy
Due to the high number of students with severe food allergies and special dietary concerns, as well as Iron Horse’s emphasis on health and wellness, birthday celebrations may not include food. Classroom teachers can celebrate birthdays with special activities or have parents bring in special items or non-food treats. All birthdays will be announced daily. Parents may not send birthday party invitations to school for distribution unless all students from the class are included.
Students will be required to keep their phones and smartwatches in their backpacks from "bell to bell." Students will have access to their personal devices before and after school. Exceptions are made for students with health care plans/504 that indicate a medical need.
Lightning Dismissal
Should our school call a Lightning Dismissal, we will follow the process outlined below by the Douglas County School District. Please familiarize yourself with this protocol so you are prepared should we need to dismiss in this way. In the case of a lightning dismissal, the following procedure will be followed:
Lightning Dismissal is called when lightning is less than 10 miles away. Parent/Guardian members will get an email/text/call letting you know that a lightning dismissal has been called. Please make sure you have opted into district communication (email, text, etc) in your parent portal.
Adults must come into the building to pick up their child. NO STUDENTS will be allowed to walk home or ride their bikes. The only people allowed to take students from classrooms are the parents/guardians of that student, an older sibling (18 years of age), or people on that specific student’s emergency contact in IC.
Students with cell phones in their backpacks may text or call their parents/guardian to pick them up in the classroom.
If your child is in BASE, they will go directly to the Cafeteria. BASE will remain open, and you are able to pick your child up as planned.
Bussers will remain in their classroom with all other students. When we have an “all clear,” the bussers will load and head home. Please know that they will be arriving at their stop later than normal. All walkers who have not been picked up by the all clear announcement will also be dismissed at this time.
Staff will be at the front door holding it open for parents. Other staff members will be at the interior doors checking that students are heading out with appropriate parents/guardians.
