Week of 9/1
Hello 5th Grade Families!
I hope you're having a wonderful, long weekend! The weather finally cleared up and we've been enjoying the sunshine. It's much needed after all the cloudy days and rain we've had! My son had a cross country meet on Friday and we got poured on, so I'm happy for some sunshine!
Your kiddos did GREAT with their iReady reading diagnostic last week! We will continue with the math diagnostic this week (and complete any reading tests that didn't quite get finished). We will test Tuesday-Thursday from 8:45-9:45 again. We will also move into our first EL Module, which is our Human Rights Module. Throughout this module, we will explore answers to the question: What are human rights, and how do real people and fictional characters respond when those rights are threatened? We will read both fictional and nonfictional stories of characters who experience hardships in different capacities, research and report on our own Human Rights Heroes, and learn about local organizations who are working to uphold human rights; such as the Backpack Society, Cafe 180, and Freedom Service Dogs. This is a deep and thought provoking module with so much experiential learning, and I cannot wait to begin.
In science, we will begin our unit on Earth and Space! This is a super fun and engaging unit, with a Field Work experience to boot! We are tentatively scheduled to go to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science on Tuesday, November 11th! We will be attending a Planetarium show and engaging with the space exhibit at the Museum to enrich our learning experience! Please stay tuned for more details as we get closer, but be sure to "pencil-in" this date on your calendars- as we will need drivers and chaperones!
Math Crew Info
Ms. Jess’ Math Crew- Even though we had a shorter math block due to iReady, these kiddos worked really hard on their first pre-test! This week we will begin with Topic 1 (see the attached overview) by discussing exponents, place value within the whole number and decimal systems, and a little review of comparing and rounding decimals. Your mathematician can expect math homework this week on decimal place values.
Ms. Kacee & Ms. Hanna's Math Crews- We will continue working on place value and powers of ten in the coming weeks. We have been working on building our math community and reviewing previous years standards. Please have your child work on their fact fluency (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) nightly and encourage a mathematical mindset!
Have a wonderful week!
