Fifth grade reading focuses on the pleasure of reading and the skills necessary to help students read effectively AND efficiently. Below is a list of the overall concepts that will be developed during the course of the year.

Students will learn about....

Using pre-reading strategies such as previewing, questioning, and predicting.
Supporting claims or statements with support from the text.
Identifying, understanding, and using literary elements and devices (such as theme and point-of-view).
Reading from and understanding of a variety of genres and materials, especially non-fiction.
Genre studies (including poetry).
Researching in non-fiction, using multiple sources.
Vocabulary and word studies, including the study of prefixes and suffixes and their effects on root words and base words.

Fifth grade writing develops skills and strategies with a variety of writing types. The curriculum also focuses on learning and using writing strategies of published authors, with the students practicing those strategies in their individual pieces. Below is a list of the overall concepts that will be developed throughout the course of the year.

Students will learn about...

Using a variety of writing types such as informational writing, narrative writing, and descriptive writing, with a specific focus on persuasive writing.
Supporting claims or statements with support from a text.
Using figurative language (such as similes and metaphors).
Using literary devices (such as point-of-view).
Writing poetry and using poetic devices (such as onomatopoeia).
Researching and writing expository pieces using multiple sources.
Word studies, including prefixes and suffixes.
Using the writing process.
Assessing writing using the six traits,.
Grammar and conventions.

Oh, the beauty and complexity of numbers!

Fifth grade math consists of many different concepts, with a particular focus on fractional and decimal numbers. Below is a list of the overall concepts that will be developed during the course of the year.

Students will learn about...

Whole number place value (to the billions).
Decimal place value (to the thousandths).
Rounding numbers
Using estimation.
Strategies for solving word problems.
Order of operations.
Multiplying and dividing larger numbers (for example: 745 x 46).
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals.
Adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators.
Multiplying and dividing fractions.
Understanding, explaining, building, and extending patterns.
Building and interpreting graphs.
Converting measurements.
Calculating the perimeter and area of quadrilaterals.
Calculating the volume of rectangular prisms.
Identifying shapes by their attributes.

Fifth grade socials studies focuses on the beginnings of our country and our government. Imbedded in this is a further understanding of geography.
