I believe all students have the ability to learn Math and it is my job to help them connect to Math in a way that is meaningful to them. I like to help create a classroom where students are involved in the learning & many modes & senses are being used. I like to meet students where they are in this learning journey. For some, this means building their confidence in Math to know they truly can do it if they can working at it. For some, it means challenging them to think deeper about what they already know and what they are learning, to make Math exciting for them and push their thinking. Building relationships is the key for me and I love getting to know all my students as Mathematicians, Students, and Humans.
What I love most about teaching Middle School is that MS kids have so much spirit and are open to learning new things. Middle School is a great time to push yourself to think deeper and challenge your thinking about Math, especially if you are willing to "go brave". There is nothing that fills my heart more than when a student says, "No, can we please wait a few more minutes to pack up...I want to keep working at this problem until I figure it out"; OR "This might not be correct, but this is why I think the answer is _____ and I want to share it with everyone". Taking risks allows you to solve problems and create understanding. I look forward to taking risks with your students this year and going brave!
I love to help connect Math to real life for students. I welcome the question, "How are we going to use this in real life?" and I want students to learn and see that Math is all around them and a part of almost everything they do.
