What I think: It seems as though we are more divided as a people, and as a government, than ever here in the United States. One side says "up," while the other simultaneously says "down." It is my goal in this US Government class not to push any political beliefs on the students, but to present them with all sides of an issue and allow them to make their own decisions. I want them to know what the purpose of government is, and how it works here in the US, but from there they need to draw their own conclusions as to the government's reach in our daily lives. I welcome, and in fact encourage, lively but respectful debate on these issues in class. I want them to know it is okay to have an opinion and talk about it, and that discussing things openly and rationally is an agent for change. (If only Congress could figure that out).
