The ocean whispers,
Come to my pacific shorelines
Where the tides and gorgeous pink skies
Run high above
Your terrestrial love
The ocean still
doesn’t understand my general
Location, for I am
Over 1,270 miles away
From its navy blue seawaves.
I was going to be in the wave’s embrace
Just once more, but then my trip to return
Was sadly cancelled
Due to Physics midterm.
I was born in San Francisco,
Golden Gate in view
Now, I like skiing, exploring the Rockies, and
Watching the golden Aspens as seasons go.
However; Surfing, investigating the long piers,
Watching the tide pools fill,
Will forever be part of landlocked me.
Nevertheless, I recently learned
In some interesting class,
That a beautiful Aspen Tree
(my favorite thing in Colorado)
Is one of the largest organisms
To ever live.
You may be wondering,
But I’ve seen bigger and better trees
In let’s just say
CA’s Redwood National Park,
So, how can the centuries old Redwoods be smaller?
Well, it’s what’s underneath the ground that counts.
All the Aspens in one forest can be connected by their
Long, neverending roots.
Intertwined.
The intricate root system allows what seems to be
Hundreds of separate trees
To act as one single individual.
The next time you go up to Vail Pass
or the Georgetown Loop,
Try to find a collection of Aspen trees that are all the same
Shade of
Golden yellow-
Instead of a magnitude of trees that most people see
Them to be,
You will know that they are all one.
The ocean is my root,
But now the Aspens are making me
Into this vibrant
Golden individual
I love you, dear ocean,
But I have to be
My own singular Aspen tree
