This lesson comes from the US Holocaust Museum Online Exhibit Some Were Neighbors: Deconstructing the Familiar: Photo Activity
In this activity, you and your tour group will analyze an image and think about the roles people played in the Holocaust.
When you arrive at this station go over the Some Were Neighbors activity sheet with your group/partner. You can find this in your student packet.
Get a picture from an adult in the room (this picture does not have a caption on it)
Spend about 5 minutes completing section one
When you are done with section one, ask an adult for the picture with the caption
Complete section two
When you are done with the form, your group needs to answer the question, "What might explain why the people are doing what they are doing?" Write the answer on the construction paper, picture #, and group names and hang it in the space provided for all to see.
SHIFTING LOYALTIES
CERNĂUŢI, ROMANIA (TODAY: CHERNIVTSI, UKRAINE), MAY 1930
A Romanian Jewish woman, Lotte Gottfried (far left), attends a social gathering at the home of a non-Jewish family. She was escorted to the party by an old family friend, Dr. Brilliant (standing third from the right). Brilliant became a Nazi supporter after a trip to Berlin in 1938 and abruptly terminated his long standing friendship with the Gottfrieds.
