This unit introduces students to the world of sensors by exploring sensors they see and use everyday. It walks them through setting up three simple yet powerful sensors, then encourages them to explore a variety of other sensors. The goal - learning what sensors can do and how we can use them to learn more about the world arounds us.
Expect that unit 2 will take approximately 5 - 50 min class periods to complete.
Students will:
engage in the development of sensor circuits and validate their findings
practice the assembly of a variety of sensors and explain their function
utilize vocabulary associated with sensor technology

Writing PromptsÂ
Discussion Points
Idea Sparks (short lesson starters)
Mini Lessons
Virtual Field Trip Mini Lesson - Take a virtual field trip with Discovery Education and TRANE technologies to learn how sensors are currently being used to help our planet.
Human Cyborgs Mini Lesson - consider the current advancements in human cyborg technology and how that impacts our lives going forward. Dive into the ethics of advancing humans as part of technology.
Next Generation Sensors Mini Lesson - jump into your creative space as you consider how sensors work and what sensors might benefit us today or in the future.Â
Sensor Playground Mini Lesson - explore the variety of sensors that may be included with the suggested kits. See what they do and how we can constantly improve our knowledge through fun!
🌀Lesson 4: What are Sensors
This lesson is dedicated to helping students learn what sensors are through vocabulary growth and development. It also allows them to consider what type of sensor they would create that helps improve our understanding of the world arounds us.
🔎Lesson 5: Sensor Mini Investigations
This lesson encourages students to test out the three big sensors, sound, temperature, and light. It allows them to work through coding and set up of the completed circuits as well as a quick understanding check with they look at the feedback from the sensors. Below are copies of the codes used in the slides. If you would like to download them, please ensure you have Arduino IDE downloaded on your computer.
