What is ELD?

ELD stands for English Language Development. It is available to students who are identified as an English Learner.

Goals of the English Learner Program in DCJESD

  • Develop fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English and to ensure proficiency in the district’s core curriculum as quickly and effectively as possible.

  • Have equal access to the curriculum provided for all students and equal opportunity for academic achievement.

  • Develop cross-cultural understanding.

In Dry Creek, the unique needs of EL students are met in a variety of ways

  • Teachers are GLAD trained through Project GLAD®. It is a model of professional development dedicated to building academic language and literacy for all students, especially second language learners.

  • Students are provided targeted instruction through both whole group and small group lessons in their classroom.

  • If needed, students are pulled out of class for small group or 1:1 instruction focused on developing their English language.
