Music Department Grade Norming: Common Rubrics
Criterion A: Knowledge and understanding ( Researcher, Creator, Performer)
1-2 The student’s work demonstrates limited knowledge and understanding of theory of music study. He or she presents limited critical understanding of music theory (including music form, rhythm, notation and Harmony, diction, instrumentation, timbre, texture, etc), in the context of their own work. 3-4 The student’s work demonstrates adequate knowledge and understanding of theory of music study. He or she presents adequate critical understanding of music theory, in the context of their own work. 5-6 The student’s work demonstrates substantial knowledge and understanding of theory of music study. He or she presents substantial critical understanding of music theory, in the context of their own work. 7-8 The student’s work demonstrates excellent knowledge and understanding of theory of music study. Criterion B: Developing Skills( Researcher, Creator, Performer)

Criterion C: Thinking Creatively( Researcher, Creator, Performer)
1-2 The student demonstrates limited expression and communication of musical intentions and has not reached a point of realization. 3-4 The student demonstrates adequate expression and communication of musical intentions and have reached partial point of realization. 5-6 The student demonstrates substantial expression and communication of musical intentions. Student is able to elaborate an idea, a theme or a personal interpretation to a point of realization. 7-8 The student demonstrates purposeful expression and effective communication of musical intention. Student is able to create an idea, a theme or a personal interpretation to a point of realization.
1-2 The student’s composition demonstrates limited stylistic coherence, a limited sense of how creative decisions impact audiences, and a limited creative intention that has not been realized.3-4 The student’s composition demonstrates adequate stylistic coherence, an adequate sense of how their creative decisions impact audiences, and an adequate creative intention that is mostly realized.5-6 The student’s composition demonstrates substantial stylistic coherence, a substantial sense of how their creative decisions impact audiences, and a substantial creative intention that is mostly realized.7-8 The student’s composition demonstrates excellent stylistic coherence, an excellent sense of how their creative decisions impact audiences, and an excellent creative intention that has been fully realized.
Criterion D: Responding ( Researcher, Creator, Performer)
