Course Description:

MYP5 Music in English 9/10 is a performance-based Music class. The Music in English/Chinese class is conducted by the teacher in English/Chinese. Students are trained in music reading skills, sight singing, ear training, music appreciation and interpretation. Students explore world cultures through language, rhythm, rhyming, harmony, among others. Performances can include solo, group singing, composing music and piano. Units include Music Elements, Music Genre, Music History and Culture, Music administration , exploring copyright and media piracy and live performance.

U1 - AOI 1 : Music for sociocultural and political expression

The lens for studying this area of inquiry focuses on the use of music to express and convey political thought or opinions, to communicate sociocultural messages or to preserve sociocultural traditions.• Students may look at the cultural, historical, political and social contexts of music. They will study why and how music influences situations, and why and how situations affect the development of music.• Students will also look at how music is created and performed, studying creating and performing conventions, techniques and devices used to communicate different messages according to their context.

U2 - AOI 2: Music for listening and performance

The lens for studying this area of inquiry focuses on music that, aside from a musical message, does not claim to convey a distinct message or inspiration. It is created merely for its intrinsic aesthetic value.• Students may look at the cultural, historical, social contexts and position of this music. They will, for example, study the place and value of music in specific situations, cultures and societies.• Students will also look at how music is created and performed, studying creating and performing conventions, techniques and devices used to create intrinsic or aesthetic values, and will evaluate the outcomes.

U3 - AOI 3: Music for dramatic impact, movement and entertainment

The lens for studying this area of inquiry focuses on the use of music to express dramatic intention, to serve and support movement or dance, or to support entertainment and commercial uses.• Students may look at the dramatic or expressive reasons for which the music is written. They will study why and how music influences the audience and audience responses. They will also study why and how music serves and supports drama, movement or entertainment and the development of music for these purposes.For this reason, students will look carefully at how music is created and performed, studying creating and performing conventions, techniques and devices used to communicate messages to achieve specific reactions in order to address a target audience or to achieve desired responses. They will evaluate the success of music in relation to its purpose and goals.

U4 - AOI 4: Music Technology in the electronic and digital age

The lens for studying this area of inquiry focuses on the use of electronic and digital technologies for creating, performing and producing music.• Students may, for example, look at how music technology is developed and applied to the music-making process in various electronic and digital forms. They will study musical concepts, particularly those developed from emerging technologies, and they will be aware of how new technologies are transforming the way we participate in musical activities.• Students will look carefully at how music is created, performed and produced, studying creating, performing and production conventions, techniques and devices used in electronic and digital platforms. They will evaluate the success of applying music technology in relation to their purpose and goals.
