Students opting this course are taking the NCFE Level 2 Technical Award in Music Technology.
This qualification enables learners to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the music technology industry. It’s suitable for learners who are motivated and challenged by learning through hands-on experiences. The qualification will allow learners to gain practical skills in creating music using technology.
This course consists of four mandatory units which are internally and externally assessed:
Unit 1: Using a Digital Audio Workstation
Unit 2: Creating Music
Unit 3: Studio Recording
Unit 4: Sound Creation
The course is assessed in three ways.
50% of the course is made up of a portfolio of work across all four units. This is then internally assessed and externally quality assured.

15% of the course is done from a written listening exam. This assesses the knowledge and skills drawn from across the course.
35% of the course is done from a practical test. This assessed the application of knowledge and skills from across the course.
The final grade for the qualification is based on a structure of Not Yet Achieved, Level 2 Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*. Learners need to achieve a Distinction for each unit in order to achieve an overall grade of Distinction*.
Throughout the course, the emphasis will be placed on ensuring students have the knowledge and skills to be successful in Music Technology. Students will be largely working on creating a portfolio of work which demonstrates their knowledge and skills. There will be a consistent use of IT in the lessons as well as developing practical skills required for work in studios and other music settings. Pupils do not need to be able to play an instrument for this course, but basic keyboard skills are incredibly useful.

Even more importantly, more than two million people work in creative industries - so there is plenty of opportunity for future progression!
