Joshua Smith is a full-time Psychology Instructor and the Chair of DC3's Social Sciences Division. He has been at DC3 since 2020. Before coming to DC3, Joshua taught in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and Toronto Canada - where he also completed his graduate studies and research. Although Joshua's degree is in developmental psychology, he is a comparative psychologist and primatologist by training. Joshua has more than a dozen years experience working with nonhuman primates. Before his graduate studies, Joshua worked with primates as a care technician, a research technician, a research laboratory manager, a surgical assistant, and an animal welfare liaison. Joshua received his graduate training at York University under the supervision of renowned primatologist Dr. Anne Russon. He has conducted behavior and welfare research with ex-captive orangutans in Indonesia, with zoo-housed orangutans and gorillas at the Toronto Zoo, and with a range of primate and non-primate species at the Jacksonville Zoo. Joshua's research focuses on human-animal interactions and relationships.

Join us in the DC3 Library for our September Science Café, “The Accelerating, Expanding Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and Einstein’s Cosmological Constant,” presented by Dr. Bharat Ratra, distinguished professor of Physics at Kansas State University. “Dark energy is the leading candidate for the mechanism that is responsible for causing the cosmological expansion to accelerate. Bharat Ratra will describe the astronomical data which persuade cosmologists that (as yet undetected) dark energy and dark matter are by far the main components of the energy budget of the universe at the present time. He will review how these observations have led to the development of a quantitative "standard" model of cosmology that describes the evolution of the universe from an early epoch of inflation to the complex hierarchy of structure seen today. In this non-technical talk, he will also discuss the basic physics, and the history of ideas, on which this model is based.”
