Homework

Homework Expectations:

Homework is a fundamental part of our general academic program and helps develop a strong work ethic and personal organizational skills. Homework’s immediate educational purpose includes the following: ● To reinforce and master facts and concepts taught in class; ● To prepare for the next day of class and for quizzes and tests; ● To develop study skills and habits; ● To work on assignments not readily accomplished in the classroom, such as reading, projects, and writing essays; ● To inform parents of what is being taught in the classroom. In addition to regular classroom assignments, we would like each child to read, or be read to, at least three times a week and preferably every day. Reading is the foundation for all subsequent learning. Thus, by reading to your child you encourage your child’s growth and strengthen family ties. By making sure your child is reading at home you are directly contributing to his education. Homework should be an opportunity for practice or for acquisition of material to be taught in class. Parents are not expected to “teach” new material to students.

Assigned Homework (Home Enjoyment!)

Homework should take about 40 minutes a day, PLUS about 20 minutes of reading/studying time.  Homework is required to be turned in on time.  Work turned in on time, signed (no initials please) by a parent/guardian, and respectfully free of rips, tears, food/drink spills etc. will receive full credit.

Nightly Math Exercises: Parent sets a timer for 40 minutes. Student starts with the odd-numbered problems and then goes back to do the even numbered problems until the timer goes off.  All work must be done in pencil. Parent signs (no initials please) top of math exercise to attest to the fact that the student truly made a good faith effort for 40 minutes without distractions.  We will correct homework the next day in class, using red ink.  Student will not be docked for not being able to complete the math exercise IF a parent has signed, not initialed, the top of the front page.

Reading Logs are due every Monday (not before please)--those dated and signed (no initials please) by a parent will receive credit.  Reading can be a book of choice, at or below grade level. Enjoy your local library! Read to younger siblings or other family members. Please do not pre-sign reading logs.

Mock Spelling, Greek/Latin tests: Twice a month, a parent (or grandparent!) administers a Mock Test the day before the real test. Student writes any word, root, or definition they missed three times each. Parent signs (no initials please) and dates Mock Test. Mock Tests are due on test day Fridays.

As needed (varies by student): Read/Study for upcoming tests and quizzes; rework any math homework problems you got wrong, if any, and show your work. For IEW Composition class, I give students one hour of class time per paragraph (5-7 sentences). If they do not finish during the allotted class time, they will have to finish the writing at home.

Homework is required to be turned in on time.  Work turned in on time, signed by a guardian, and respectfully free of rips, tears, food/drink spills etc. will receive full credit.

There is a "No Name" folder in the classroom for work submitted without a student name on it.
