She was the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress and in the 1972 United States presidential election, she became the first African-American candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
She served as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001, senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, the 67th United States secretary of state from 2009 to 2013, and in 2016 became the first woman to be nominated for president of the United States by a major political party when she won the Democratic Party nomination in 2016.
